Wheels/Tyres

Postby doc400sp » Sun Feb 07, 2010 9:32 pm

I've discovered the front tyres are rubbing on the inner arches at full lock , tyres fitted are 195/60 R15 88H

A mate suggested a different profile tyre would cure problem. Is this right and what are the advantages/disadvantages off staying on 15ins ?

your tyres are WAY too big.

15'' RA a perfect Rocco wheel - on the those rims you will need EITHER 195/50 - 15 or 185/55 - 15

or 195/45 - 15 will look good if you're going lower at all.

195/55R15 will give you the correct rolling radius as near as makes no difference, so your speedo will still be accurate.

does it make loads of noise on full lock? tyre wear looks consistent with the tracking being miles out

Speedo still accurate? Ha! Scirocco speedo is far from accurate (as with most cars). Mine is between 2 and 10 mph optimistic depending how fast i'm going. It was worse when my wheel diameters were smaller.
Tornado GTII: Koni, Flo-flex, Girling, Weber, K&N, Powerflow, Goodridge, ASA, Yokohama... to fit: stainless 4 branch.

Only driven the car a short distance but didn't notice any noise.Scoring on plastic inner gaurds suggests it's down to tyre size.

repeat my earlier comments -

best bet = go for the 195/50 - 15. Any higher a profile and you'll have rubbing issues.

have a play with this - http://www.carbibles.com/tyre_bible_pg4.html

for interest - the big bumper mk2 16v golfs had 185/55 - 15 on BBS RA as standard which gives a slightly higer rolling radius.

so will i. have you had your tracking checked? unless it is rubbing on the arch or the strut all the time then it very unlikely that is the cause of the wear you hsva shown. looks much much more inline with the tracking being out. that being the case, if you replace the tyres you'll just scrub your way thru them too
